Advantages and disadvantages of using the contraceptive pill

Women rely a lot on birth control pills or contraceptive pills when it comes to preventing pregnancy. However it also becomes necessary to know the advantages and disadvantages of using the birth control pills so that you can make a careful choice about using the pills.

Advantages of using the pill:

The pill has a major advantage supporting it, which makes it so popular amongst women, is that it does not interrupt sex. In case you want to avoid getting pregnant, just pop a pill as per your doctor’s suggestions and enjoy sex. Menstrual bleeding becomes regular, lighter and pain reduces if you are using the pill. At times it has been seen that symptoms of PMS or premenstrual syndrome get alleviated if you are using birth control pills. It reduces the risk of cancer of the ovary, womb and colon. Pills also tend to reduce acne in women. These pills also provide protection against pelvic inflammatory diseases. It may reduce the risk of fibroids, ovarian cysts and (non-cancerous) breast disease.

Disadvantages of using the pill:

Though birth control pills cause side effects in women using them, those go away within some months. Headaches, nausea, breast tenderness and mood changes are some of the common side effects reported by women using these pills. Some women also complain of spotting and breakthrough bleeding, which is explained as an unexpected bleeding on days when the pill is taken.

If these side effects do not go away, it is advisable to change the brand of the pill you are using. In case you have major changes in your blood pressure while taking the pill, you should immediately report this to your doctor. Other serious side effects of birth control pill can be having a small increase in risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, or/and blood clots leading to thrombosis. It has also been seen that if the pill is used continuously for five years, there is a small increase in the risk of cervical cancer.
